Mindful Sips: Embrace Moderation This January, Skip Deprivation on the Her Well Being Ayurveda and Yoga Blog Kombucha Spritzer Recipe

I'm passionate about helping women unlock their greatest potential to experience the energy, focus, and mood that they deserve.

Is Dry January Healthy?

What Is Mindful Sips? At this time of the year, you might be thinking of abstaining from alcohol after the indulgences of the holiday season. Dry January, as it’s called.

In my opinion, that sounds kinda harsh.

Deprivation can lead to feelings of missing out and ultimately stronger cravings.

Restricting can create disordered eating or drinking habits that may result in over-indulging.

The key: STRIKE A BALANCE

Deprivation Versus Moderation

There is a kinder, alternative approach to complete deprivation.

Deprivation can send your nervous system into a tizzy and potentially damage your digestion and gut health. Who wants that??

Strict abstinence can be hard. Consider the feelings of deprivation and social isolation.

Instead, consider mindful drinking, where the focus is on quality over quantity.

Listen to your body and find a balance that works for you.

Break the Binge and Purge Cycle!

There are many health benefits of moderation and can be a more sustainable long-term lifestyle choice.

Some may find moderation harder than going “cold-turkey” but it is far more sustainable in the long run.

They key is to find the middle path.

Nothing like a side of Buddhist wisdom to go with that drink!

Now, embrace your inner Mr. Miyagi and let’s do this.

Health Risks Associated with Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Let’s get into the nitty gritty first!

Let’s start with a good WHY it’s a good idea to reduce your alcohol intake.

A pooled analysis of data from 53 studies found for each alcoholic drink consumed per day, the relative risk of breast cancer increased by about 7%. Women who had 2-3 alcoholic drinks per day had a 20% higher risk of breast cancer than women who didn’t drink alcohol.

Here, I stress the point that moderation—defined as one drink or less per day for women—can reduce these health risks.

The Kombucha Spritzer – A Delicious and Healthy Alternative

My own recipe, this Kombucha Spritzer is a flavorful, low-alcohol option that still offers a satisfying experience.

Here’s a breakdown of the ingredients:

  • Kombucha: slightly fizzy fermented beverage that can boost good gut bugs usually made with tea and fruit
  • Hibiscus: Known for its antioxidant properties and vibrant flavor.
  • Mangosteen: A tropical fruit that offers anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Rose: Adds a delicate floral note and can help with relaxation.
  • Honey: A natural sweetener that provides a touch of sweetness without the need for refined sugars.

I used Anima Mundi Rose powder, Anima Mundi Hibiscus-Mangosteen powder, cinnamon, and honey. My favorite brand of Kombucha is June Shine in Grapefruit.

This bev not only beautifully balances sweetness and tartness, it includes lots of flower power. Hibiscus and rose both have special qualities that buffer the inflammatory effects of alcohol.

You can add 2-3 ounces of a tasty, light sparkling wine like Prosecco. I LOVE this when I happen to have it on hand. You can also use a regular white or red wine – choose organic grapes whenever you can.

Now, you can imbibe with your friends and feel good that you’re making healthy choices.

OR, you can also replace regular kombucha with HARD kombucha that makes it super fizzy and mellow. It’s still low alcohol with only 5-6% alcohol.

Responsible Drinking Tips for January and Beyond

Listen. Reducing alcohol intake is a smart move towards cancer prevention. And, it’s not just for January!

Here are some practical tips for practicing moderation everyday, all year long.

The key is to be REALISTIC with personal limits and set boundaries that set you up for success.

  • Choose drinks that are lower in alcohol content.
  • Enjoy alcohol-free days throughout the week and craft an indulgent mocktail instead. Get creative!
  • When you do imbibe, savor your drink slowly and appreciate the flavors and craftsmanship.

Do your best! You’re human, which means you’re going to screw up sometimes.

Conclusion: Moderation is Key

Moderation can be a healthier and more enjoyable approach than complete abstinence for many people. Give it a try!
