May 2024: Lunar Astrology for Full Moon Rituals for Women

New Moon in Aries on May 7th

April’s New Moon will be in Aries, a fire sign, and the first sign in the Zodiac. Aries is ruled by the red planet Mars, the combative and competitive celestial being. This New Moon encourages us to be courageous and strong as we weather the waves of deep emotions that may emerge at this time.

Aries will help you meet your emotions face to face. Be brave and vulnerable as you look a little longer with humble heart.

New Moon time is not the time for big actions or decisions. It’s time to reflect and look compassionately at our feelings and thoughts. It’s a reflective time of setting intentions for the beginning of another lunar cycle.

Mercury Goes Direct in Aries: Shift to Forward Progress

As we recover from another retrograde back in April, we might feel things kick into gear as Mercury goes direct. This month he transits Aries May 10th – 31st. You may feel a little boost of confidence boost during this time. Let’s go!

Aries Self-Care for the New Moon: Feed Your Internal Fire

Ariens are headstrong, energetic people who drive themselves pretty hard at everything they do. That said, the low energy vibe of the New Moon may urge you to instead turn energy inward in an introspective way.

This may be particularly challenging for our dear Ariens who like to push themselves. Remember that even Ariens need to refill their well in order to have good energy for the rest of the month.

The New Moon marks the beginning of the lunar cycle and along with Aries means a courageous and enthusiastic start to the month for new beginnings, new plans, etc.

Engage in relaxing activities that fuel your passions, such as reading an inspiring book, journaling, or watching a motivational movie. This can feel satisfying while you cool your jets and set your sights on next steps.

Yoga for Aries New Moon and Solar Plexus Manipura Chakra

Aries is associated with the solar plexus or Manipura Chakra, which aligns with its attributes of agency, power, and self-esteem. This being a New Moon, I suggest restorative yoga postures that feed your energy reserves and allow for rest while nourishing the solar plexus, the seat of your inner fire.

An Aries New Moon Yoga Practice is an invitation to focus on restorative yoga postures that nourish the solar plexus.

Use a few pillows or a bolster to support your body in each pose for more grounding affect.

Supported Resting Pigeon Pose or Salamba Kapotasana (and the variation with bent knees) with bolster under hips and pillows supporting arms.

Seated Twists like Marichyasana (one-legged seated twist)

Supported Forward Bends like Paschimottasana (seated forward fold) or Janu Sirsasana (head to knee pose).

Breathing Exercises (Pranayama) for Aries New Moon & Solar Plexus Manipura Chakra

For non-Mars natives, explore core-strengthening and pranayama like simple belly (diaphragmatic) breathing and gentle kapalabhati breathing.

For Aries and Scorpios, explore cooling pranayama like Chandra Bhedhana (left-nostril breathing) and Shitali or Shitkari Pranayama (breathing through tongue or teeth).

Ayurvedic Herbs for The Aries New Moon

Aries is a fiery sign, so they need balancing cool and grounding plant medicine. Green herbs are perfect for this that also quell Pitta’s hot, liquidy nature. For this, I choose Nettle because it is cooling and drying. It’s also great for Springtime hay fever so the timing is just right.

I like to combine drying Nettle with licorice, which is grounding root. The sweet taste compliments as it balances fiery Pitta. Ginger root stokes the digestive fire and helps with absorption of nutrients.

I also like to add coriander and fennel seeds to support digestion and detoxification.

Nettle, Licorice & Ginger Tea

This is a hearty brew with a little sweetness and spice.

  • 1/2 c. dry Stinging Nettle leaves (choose US or locally grown whenever possible)\
  • 2 Tbps. CCF seeds
  • 1 Tbsp. dry licorice root
  • 2-3 slices fresh ginger root
  • 4 cups water

Place dry nettle leaves in a quart mason jar. Pour 2 cups of hot water over the leaves and set aside.

Bring 2 cups of water to a simmer with the licorice root. Turn off the heat and let steep 5-10 minutes.

Strain licorice root tea into the mason jar. Add a few slices of ginger.

Enjoy cool or warm.

Sweeten to taste.

New Moon Ayurveda Self-Care Rituals

Ayurveda wisdom tells us to prepare for the low energy that is consistent with the waning and New Moon. Take some time during the week of the New Moon to tend to yourself. It can be a time of great vulnerability.

During the New Moon, it is important to try to conserve energy as much as possible, especially for our dear Ariens who like to push themselves. Trust your intuition and your heart about how you can best take care of yourself without listening to all the noise. Listen to your body.

Allow self-care to show up however it needs to.

Here are some suggestions for New Moon self-care rituals:

  • A relaxing bath with candles and calming, cooling essentials oils like mint, rose and/or chamomile
  • A slow, meditative walk in nature.
  • Head to bed early with a journal or an inspiring book.
  • Listen to an inspiring guided meditation.
  • Trust your gut feelings and let intuition guide you.

Dear Arians, this is not a check list. Pick one or two things.

Tune into what your needs are and try to meet them with a kind gesture towards yourself that’s also very doable. Self-care shouldn’t feel stressful.

Remember that the moon holidays highlight our emotions and intuition. Trust your gut feelings. Listen to your body and your heart.

May’s New Moon in Bharani Nakshatra

Nakshatras are known as lunar mansions or stations. There are 28 stations of the moon. The moon changes lunar stations every day, which makes nakshatras more specific to the lunar holiday (new or full moon) it correlates with.

This New Moon falls into the lunar mansion, or nakshatra, of Bharani ruled by the planet Venus and the god of death, Yamaraj. This place of endings, transitions, and beginnings can help us join the river of life and go with the flow. We learn that when we let go, things fall into place as they should (not always as we want them to).

This is a great time to surrender to what is and ask for guidance through meditation or prayer. Let things go that no longer serve you as well to make space for something new to emerge.

Bharani Nakshatra is associated with the throat or Vishuddha Chakra. You might find it helpful to talk to a friend or speak up for yourself to make your needs and desires known.

Full Moon in Scorpio on May 23rd

May’s Full Moon is in Scorpio, a Water sign ruled by Mars. It governs our deepest bodily parts and their functions like our colon, sacrum, and reproductive organs.

Scorpios are passionate, intense, and sometimes secretive people. They are known to brood and experience emotions on a very deep level. Their theme is: they go deep. They can also be defensive and retreat to a place of safety when they feel vulnerable.

For this Full Moon, Scorpio urges us to look beyond the surface of our relationships to connect with deep emotional meaning and purpose with others. As much as Scorpio can be on the defensive, we can also find strength through vulnerability as we face the emotional underpinnings of our agreements and relationships.

May’s Full Moon in Anuradha Nakshatra: Responsibility of Sacred Agreements

This Full Moon falls into the lunar mansion, or nakshatra, of Anuradha ruled by Mitra the Sun God of sacred contracts and relationships, and the planet Saturn who urges us to make good on those sacred agreements.

This is a great time to let your devotion, love, and loyalty shine. Or will you fall prey to jealousy, insensitivity, or even greediness and become too attached?

Anuradha Nakshatra is also associated with the Solar Plexus Manipura Chakra – a big theme in May – a great time to support your power and control center to be strong in the face of doubt and fear.

Solar Plexus Chakra Rituals for May’s Full Moon in Scorpio

The invitation is to fuel the inner fire of the solar plexus chakra.

  • Listen to a guided meditation for the solar plexus chakra
  • Warming, stimulating pranayama (yogic breathing) like Bhastrika and Kapalabhati
  • Energetic yoga practice with poses that nourish the solar plexus chakra (see below)
  • Traktaka, candle-gazing
  • Celebrate by joining a Full Moon Gathering

Yoga Postures for the Full Moon in Scorpio

In a Scorpio Full Moon yoga practice, you might focus on poses for the abdominal and pelvic region to support the digestive and reproductive system. The secondary focus is on balancing the solar plexus.

A Scorpio yoga practice can be an intense, transformational practice. Try to meet your edge instead of crashing past it. The idea is to build strength as well as accept its limitations. This practice translates well into everyday life for anyone dealing with a power imbalance; either deficient or excessive.

To support both water and fire energy, you might light some candles and play sensual music that may connect you with your intuition as you move from pose to pose; using any variation that feels right for the moment.

For this month’s Scorpio Full Moon yoga video, I share a grounding floor practice that works deeply into the abdominal and pelvic region to balance the watery sacral Chakra, Svadhisthana, and invite you to chant it’s Bija mantra, VUM, with me. The Bija mantra is the single syllable “seed” sound that sends healing vibrations to the associated chakra with the sound of your voice which Ayurveda believes to be especially healing for you. Grab some props and join me!

Herbs & Food for Scorpio Full Moon

For our dear Scorpios, I love the cooling, nurturing, and hydrating qualities of Aloe Vera. Coconut water can also be helpful in the same way for those who don’t suffer from nut allergies.

Aloe Vera can be especially helpful for those who are experiencing hot flashes at night or heavy periods.

I like to take a small shot of aloe vera juice or coconut water before bed. If you’re not a fan of the taste, you can add it to a small glass of juice like apple or grape juice.
